GEORGE DALARAS, whose melancholy-powerful voice regularly puts his audience in emotional state of emergency, is known as the innovator of the Rebetiko, the “Greek Blues”. In 1974, Dalaras collaborated with Mikis Theodorakis for the first time. The following year, the album “50 years Rebetiko”, a reference work of Greek music was released. George Dalaras was born in Nea Kokkinia, Piraeus. His father, Loukas Dalaras, was a well-known Rebetiko interpreter. According to Dalaras own words he has always admired strange, exotic sounds. His repertoire is characterized by the Rebetiko, Greek folk music (for example, Asia Minor or Thrace) as well as Latin American elements. Over 20 million sold albums, sold-out houses and collaborations with Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Paco de Lucia and Al Di Meola, as well as rave reviews testify to the musician’s outstanding career. George Dalaras is names as one of the seven UNHCR goodwill ambassadors by Kofi Annan.
